Elisenda Vila Llonch: Beyond El Dorado

Beyond El Dorado

Description

In ancient Colombia, people did not use gold as currency or desire it for its economic value. Gold was revered instead for its symbolic association and transformative properties. This sacred metal was used to create some of the most visually dramatic and technically sophisticated works of art found anywhere in the Americas before European contact. Drawing on the spectacular collections of the Museum del Oro in Bogota and the British Museum, this beautiful book features over 100 masterpieces fashioned exquisitely in gold and its alloy tumbaga, including small votive figures, decorative nose rings and earrings, vessels, pectorals and masks. These are presented alongside an array of other highly valued objects textiles, ceramic figurines, shells, colourful stone beads which also played a significant part in daily and ritual contexts. Focusing on the artistic production of six of the many chiefdoms that populated pre-Hispanic Colombia, the author explores the fascinating truth behind the myth and ritual of El Dorado (the gilded one), the use of gold objects by spiritual leaders in their dangerous mystical soul journey; the role played by gold in the public expression of identity and rank by chiefs and community spiritual leaders; and the importance of gold in accompanying the deceased on the final journey to the afterlife. Beyond El Dorado: power and gold in ancient Colombia is published to complement a major exhibition at the British Museum from October 2013 to March 2014.

The Misfit Economy: Lessons in Creativity from Pirates, Hackers, Gangsters and Other Informal Entrepreneurs

Description

The Misfit Economy is about people who are just as innovative, entrepreneurial, and visionary as the Jobses, Edisons, and Fords of the world, except they're not operating out of Silicon Valley. They're in the street markets of Sao Paulo and Guangzhou, the rubbish dumps of Lagos, the flooded coastal towns of Thailand. They are pirates, slum dwellers, computer hackers, dissidents, and inner city gang members. Across the globe, diverse innovators are working in the black, grey, and informal economies to develop solutions to myriad challenges. Far from being "deviant entrepreneurs" that pose threats to our social and economic stability, these innovators display remarkable ingenuity, pioneering original methods and best practices that we can learn from and apply to formal markets in urgent need of change.

A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived: The Stories in Our Genes

Description

This is a story about you. It is the history of who you are and how you came to be. It is unique to you, as it is to each of the 100 billion modern humans who have ever drawn breath. But it is also our collective story, because in every one of our genomes we each carry the history of our species - births, deaths, disease, war, famine, migration and a lot of sex. Since scientists first read the human genome in 2001 it has been subject to all sorts of claims, counterclaims and myths. In fact, as Adam Rutherford explains, our genomes should be read not as instruction manuals, but as epic poems. DNA determines far less than we have been led to believe about us as individuals, but vastly more about us as a species. In this captivating journey through the expanding landscape of genetics, Adam Rutherford reveals what our genes now tell us about history, and what history tells us about our genes. From Neanderthals to murder, from redheads to race, dead kings to plague, evolution to epigenetics, this is a demystifying and illuminating new portrait of who we are and how we came to be.

The World of the Battleship: The Design and Careers of Capital Ships of the World's Navies 1900-1950

Description

This new volume is intended to present a genuinely global vision of the development of world's battleships. In a collection of chapters by experts from around the world, the design, building and career of a significant battleship from each of the world's navies is explored in such a way as to illuminate not just the ships but also the communities of officers and men that served in them and, more broadly, the societies and nations that built them. While ships from the Royal Navy, the US Navy, the Kriegsmarine, the Imperial Japanese Navy, the Marine Nationale and the Regia Navale are given significant coverage, so are those from the smaller navies, for example, Austria-Hungary, Russia and Turkey. Each chapter explains the origins of a particular ship, her importance as a national symbol and her place in the fleet. The genesis of her design along with particulars of her protection, armament and propulsion are covered and the construction process and launching described. The ship's complement and organisation are detailed, and daily routine and watch-keeping explained, and how this varied between peace and war.Life onboard - eating and sleeping for officers and ratings, discipline, pay, morale, pets and mascots - are covered as well as a full account of the ship's career, so that the distinctive character of each vessel and navy emerges. This is a highly original and significant book on the great capital ships of the world.

How to Make a Million from Property: Create Wealth in a Rising and Falling Property Market

Description

Wouldn't it be great if you could go into property developing knowing all the pitfalls in advance and avoid the common errors made by most first time property developers. Gary's television work continually proves to him how little the wider public actually know about his trade - despite its high profile - and he is fed up of seeing solicitors, agents and builders pull the wool over people's eyes. This passionate and opinionated guide will help first timers avoid costly mistakes by arming them with insider advice and knowledge. Turning the property sections in the bookshops upside down, 'Make a Million From Property' is upfront, candid, jargon-free and utterly devoid of bullshit - packed with the concrete facts from which readers can learn exactly how the best deals are brokered and broken.

Winner of the Gold Award in the 2006 ForeWord Book of the Year competition, this groundbreaking book describes the unique challenges of women and girls with Asperger's Syndrome. In it you'll read candid stories written by the indomitable women who have lived them. You'll also hear from experts who discuss whether 'Aspie girls' are slipping under the radar, undiagnosed; why many AS women feel like a minority within a minority (outnumbered by men 4:1); practical solutions school systems can implement for girls; social tips for teenage girls, navigating puberty, the transition to work or university, and the importance of careers. Anna Milbourne,Simona Dimitri: Peep Inside the Jungle

Peep Inside the Jungle

Description

Down in the jungle there's a chatter and a squawk. Is it the mummy tiger with her cubs? A bright-eyed tree frog? A bird of paradise or a honey bear having a midnight snack? Children can peep under the leaves and between the trees in this delightful book to spot the creatures in the jungle and see who's making all that noise.

Published on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, this book tells the story of the magnificent royal inheritance of diamonds from the time of Queen Adelaide in the 1830s to the present day. Illustrated with a wealth of archive material as well as extensive new photography of the jewels, this important publication includes stones of international importance as well as items of great historic significance, and will be a standard work of reference on diamond jewellery for many The Myth Gap: What Happens When Evidence and Arguments Aren't Enough pdf years to come. Mr Silly has bought a farm. But as you can imagine, he has some very silly ideas about how to run it, like using the farm cat to herd the sheep and the sheepdog to collect the eggs! Who will help to put everything right? The Mr Men and Little Miss Every Day series takes Roger Hargreaves' beloved characters on trips and activities that children will recognise from their own lives. All the Every Day Adventures have a 'Where's Walter' feature with Walter the worm hiding in every story making for a fun and interactive reading experience for children aged two years and up. Have you collected all the Every Day Adventures? Mr. Men at the Park; Mr. Men on Holiday; Mr. Men go Swimming; Mr. Men Ballet Show; Mr. Men Rainy Day; and, Mr. Men on the Farm. It all started with a tickle. Roger Hargreaves' son Adam asked him what a tickle looked like. In response, Roger drew a small orange man with extraordinarily long arms that could reach anywhere and tickle anyone. Mr Tickle, the first of the Mr Men, was born. Mr Tickle was soon joined by Mr Greedy, Mr Happy, Mr Nosey, Mr Sneeze and Mr Bump. The books were an instant hit and Roger went on to create many more Mr Men and Little Miss characters.

The Myth Gap: What Happens When Evidence and Arguments Aren't Enough

Description

Once upon a time our society was rich in stories. They united us and helped us to understand the world and ourselves. We called them myths. Today, we have a myth gap. Does that matter? Alex Evans argues powerfully and persuasively that it does. In this time of global crisis and transition - mass migration, inequality, resource scarcity, and climate change - it is only by finding new myths, those that speak to us of renewal and restoration, that we will navigate our way to a better future. It is stories, rather than facts and pie-charts,that have the power to animate us and bring us together in to change the world. Drawing on his first-hand experience as a political adviser within British government and at the United Nations, and examining the history of climate change campaigning and recent contests such as Brexit and the US presidential election, Alex Evans explores: how tomorrow's activists are using narratives for change, how modern stories have been used and abused, where we might find the right myths that will take us from a dark age of uncertainty towards the broad, sunlit uplands that we all seek.

Published on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, this book tells the story of the magnificent royal inheritance of diamonds from the time of Queen Adelaide in the 1830s to the present day.
